Considerate photograph

In the photograph where we had written a word on our hands I had written the word considerate. I was thinking that I should smile instead of having a blank face like a few people I had seen. The word I chose is how I see myself daily and also when I am at work.

What kind of teacher will this person become in the future?

I am thinking this person will be a nice, comforting teacher. The person in this photograph seems like a nice person. The word considerate stands out so I assume she is considerate of others. This picture feels warm, not cold. I think she will be a compassionate, understanding teacher.

Cheating in America

A few ways this applies to me is me as a student in college and me as a future educator. For me as a student in college you have to be careful when it comes to plagarism. With every paper written in college about someone or something you have to cite your sources. As a future educator it will be an important job for me to help students understand what plagarism is, what the consequences are, and how to avoid getting into trouble by citing sources the correct way and helping students understand how to expand their writing on what they have read or learned.

Proverb

"In teaching others, we teach ourselves."

I think this means that if we're helping someone to learn something we are therefore reinforcing what we know and expanding our knowledge on the things we do not know. Thus by teaching others we in turn are teaching ourselves. This is a really good proverb to think about.
"Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius." - Plato

I feel that this means that if you want a child to learn you cannot force knowledge upon them in a harsh way. If you want them to learn you need to find fun and creative ways to teach them and help them retain the knowledge you give them. Through helping them learn in fun ways will help you to discover new things about your students.

Today in class each student read scripts from a little piece of paper and each student cheered for each student who read. My script said, "I always finish everything I start with ease and pleasure." It felt pretty good to be cheered for after reading. It is something new for me to experience. This would be a good activity to use in the classroom. I feel that it would make students feel pretty good about themselves.

Writing Experience

I would say my earliest writing experience would be when I was in preschool. I remember how I would see my parents write stuff down on paper. One day I tried to do what they did which in reality it was just scribbles, but to me I thought I was writing. I remember cleaning out my room not too long ago and I found the scribbles and got a little laugh out of it.

My Weekend

Well, this weekend has been a long one. I found out I have to have surgery. I plan on having my surgery done during the week of Thanksgiving so that I do not miss much school. The upside to the weekend is that I finished a book I've been reading for a few weeks now. It's book three of four books. Now I can start the fourth book which I am excited about, but at the sametime I'm a little sad because then I'll be done with the series.

High Expectations and Safety

Students have many choices in writing, but in writing workshops not wanting to write is not an option. In writing workshops everyone writes. The author talks about how they feel that by writing, students will get better at writing. Writing workshop teachers have to make a place in their classrooms where it's okay for everyone to write and feel safe when writing.

In a high school classroom you might use this strategy by at the start of the workshop giving the students a list of goals for this writing workshop. The list needs to be open but guided. It might include write about something you enjoy, use as many adjectives and adverbs as you can, when the writing is complete go back through and highlight all the adjectives and adverbs you used, after this pick someone to share what you wrote with, compare your numbers of adjectives and adverbs, see if you can add something to each others work. As for the safety of that workshop just encourage the students, and remind them not to be rude to other students work. -Lindsay Olenick

I think this would be a great thing to do if you were going to be teaching at the high school level except kids can be really mean. They might write things on a paper that were not constructive to the assignment. Also, some students might have a hard time coming up with something to contribute and might also cause conflict in the group, one student feels they are doing all the work. Amy

That is very true what Amy was saying about how students may write things that were not constructive to the assignment. Kids can be really mean so another thing to do is maybe not always having students read aloud maybe just have students turn in their papers if some of them are feeling anxious on what they have written in their papers.

Grammar

To begin with, grammar is an important part of our daily lives. We use it in whatever we say or write. Without proper use of grammar, when you speak and say things incorrectly people will give you a funny look. That is why it is important for you to stay in school and learn everything you can until it is time for you to enter the real world. It is also important for future educators to learn as much as they can about grammar while in college so that they will be able to pass along their knowledge to their future students. It is not just english that has proper grammar. Other countries use proper grammar and when you want to learn other languages you will need to understand how their language is structured so that when you try to speak the language you will not sound funny.

Philosophy of Learning

The philosophy of a learner (student) is they have high teacher expectations, questions, facilitator, patience, time, quiet, consistency, a good teacher, interest, to read, an open mind, hands on activities, creativity, excitement, motivation, and structure. The philosophy of a learner (teacher) is they have good support, take risks, reflection, reteach/revisit, knowledge, patience, organized, creativity, structure, clear/concise, planner, excitement, relateable, and they are positive. These are the qualities that learners posses/need to posses to become a good learner. These are also qualities that learners hope and expect teachers to have. A few other things learners need to have are good listneing skills, an open mind, a positive attitude, and full attention.

Illusion Quote

"It is an illusion that writers live more significant lives than non-writers; the truth is, writers are just more in the habit of finding the significance that is in their lives." - Lucy Calkins

I think the way this quote connects to the activity that we did today is that sometimes we're quick to judge others and the assumptions that we make are not always correct.

Literacy

Literacy is an important part of our every day lives. It is our ability to read, write, comprehend, etc. Without this we would definitely be behind than the rest of the world.

Day 2

Today we created our own blog page.
